Cantilevered oak treads are attached to steel clamps recessed into a hollow steel box section stringer. The stringer is set into a thin stud wall as the masonry wall behind was not in good enough condition to support the stair. The hollow section stringer was chosen to resist torsion.
Each tread also has a ‘porthole’ access point to allow the clamps to be tightened should this become necessary. It was felt this was an appropriate feature to include as each tread is independent of all others and general usage or timber shrinkage could lead to an individual tread becoming loose.
